What to Expect

Preparing for Your Fumigation

Proper fumigation preparation ensures the treatment is effective and goes smoothly. Here’s what you need to do before your scheduled fumigation date.

  • Remove or double-bag all food, medicine, and consumable items not in sealed glass, metal, or hard plastic containers.
  • Plan to vacate the property with all family members and pets for 2–3 days during treatment.
  • Open all interior doors, drawers, and cabinets to allow the fumigant to reach all areas.
  • Water any landscaping touching the house 6 inches deep the night before service.
  • Remove or trim plants that are attached to the structure so the tent can be properly placed. Plants need to be cut back 12 inches from the building.
  • Leave garage doors unlocked and car windows rolled down if your vehicle stays on-site.
  • Remove indoor plants, as they will not survive the fumigation process.
  • Your Talos fumigation coordinator will provide a complete personalized checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Termite fumigation is a whole structure treatment where the home is tented and treated with fumigant gas to reach drywood termite colonies hidden inside walls, attics, framing, and other inaccessible wood.

Fumigation is usually recommended when drywood termite activity is widespread, hidden, or located in areas that cannot be fully reached with local treatment.

Most termite fumigations take about 2 to 3 days, including tenting, treatment, aeration, testing, and clearance for reentry.

The home can be reentered only after the licensed fumigation team completes aeration, testing, and posts the official clearance notice.

Yes, when performed by licensed professionals like our Talos team. You’ll vacate the property during treatment. After the state-required aeration period, we test the air to ensure it’s safe. The fumigant is a gas that leaves no residue on surfaces, furniture, or belongings.

Whole-structure fumigation is the most effective treatment for drywood termites. The gas penetrates every piece of wood in the structure, eliminating all colonies, including those hidden inside walls, attics, and framing. It’s backed by our fumigation warranty.

Plants outside the home and NOT under the fumigation tent should not be affected. Plants attached to the house (bougainvillea, jasmine, etc.) will need to be gently detached so the tent can rest properly. Indoor plants must be removed before service, as they will not survive. We’ll guide you through plant protection.

Yes, you can leave your car in the garage. Just leave it unlocked with the windows rolled down so that fumigant does not get trapped inside the vehicle.

You can re-enter after the state-required aeration period, which is usually on the third day. We’ll post an official notice on your front door with the exact date and time you and your family can safely return.

No. The fumigant we use is a gas and does not leave any surface residue on floors, countertops, furniture, or clothing. Once your home is aerated and cleared, everything is safe to use as normal.

The cost depends on several factors including your home’s size and the treatment scope. Talos Pest Control offers free, no-obligation inspections and competitive pricing. Contact us for a personalized quote and we’ll match or beat competitor pricing.

Local treatment targets specific, accessible areas of termite activity. Fumigation treats the entire structure by enveloping it in a gas that penetrates all wood, including areas you can’t see or reach. For widespread drywood termite infestations, fumigation is the most thorough and effective option.
